Can You Forgive Her? - Anthony Trollope
So, I finally picked up the first of Anthony Trollope's Palliser novels, and let me tell you, it's nothing like the dry, dusty classic I was half-expecting. It's juicy, funny, and painfully relatable.
The Story
Meet Alice Vavasor. She's smart, wealthy, and engaged to John Grey—a man who is basically perfect. He's kind, devoted, and sensible. So, of course, Alice calls off the wedding. Why? She's haunted by the thrill of her previous relationship with her cousin, George Vavasor. George is ambitious, brooding, and completely untrustworthy with money or emotions. As Alice wobbles between security and passion, we also follow her friend, Lady Glencora. Glencora is trapped in a wealthy but loveless marriage to the rising politician Plantagenet Palliser, and she's still carrying a torch for a charming but worthless suitor. Their stories twist together, asking the same big question: Is it better to choose safe happiness or risky desire?
Why You Should Read It
What blew me away was how modern these characters feel. Trollope doesn't judge Alice. He lets her be confused, stubborn, and frustrating as she tries to carve out her own path in a world that tells her exactly what she should want. You'll want to shake her and hug her at the same time. The political subplot with George isn't just background noise; it's a brilliant mirror of his personal corruption. And the writing! It's like listening to a witty, slightly gossipy friend tell you a story. The chapters fly by because you're constantly thinking, "What on earth is she going to do next?"
Final Verdict
This book is perfect for anyone who loves character-driven stories where the biggest battles happen in drawing rooms and conflicted hearts. If you enjoy Jane Austen's social observations but wish they had a bit more psychological grit and political maneuvering, Trollope is your next great read. It's a brilliant, engaging start to a series I'm now officially obsessed with. Just be prepared to argue with the characters in your head.
