Brewster’s Millions - George Barr McCutcheon
First published in 1902, Brewster's Millions is the granddaddy of all "spend it or lose it" stories. It’s a fast-paced, funny novel that feels surprisingly fresh even today.
The Story
Montague "Monty" Brewster is a likeable, ordinary guy when he learns his rich uncle has passed away. The will offers him a choice: take a solid million dollars outright, or attempt to spend a much larger sum—one million dollars—within a single year to inherit the full seven million. The rules are strict: he can't have any assets to show for it, can't just give it away recklessly, and he absolutely cannot tell a soul about the bizarre contest. What follows is Monty's increasingly desperate and creative crusade to light money on fire, from bad investments and lavish parties to funding hopeless causes, all while his friends think he's lost his mind.
Why You Should Read It
This book is pure, clever fun. The joy isn't in the destination (we pretty much know if he'll succeed), but in the wild ride of how he tries to fail. McCutcheon has a sharp eye for human nature. Watching Monty struggle is hilarious because it turns our basic assumptions upside down—saving is easy, spending is hard, but wasting intelligently is nearly impossible. You'll catch yourself thinking, "Okay, what would I do?" and realizing the challenge is trickier than it seems. It’s also a sly look at how people treat you differently when you're suddenly flush with cash.
Final Verdict
Perfect for anyone who enjoys a lighthearted classic, a great premise, or just needs a genuinely entertaining escape. If you like the movies inspired by it (and there have been several!), you'll adore the original novel. It’s a smart, breezy read that asks a timeless question: Is money a tool for freedom, or is it the thing that traps us? You'll have a smile on your face the whole time you're figuring it out.
